Council Approves Unique Downtown Self-Help Project

With labor costs resulting in estimates of close of $40,000 for the renovation of the City’s new Department of Planning and Community Development, City Management suggested to the Council that the City purchase the materials (less than $4,000) and use employees who are skilled in construction techniques to remodel the interior of the building. With a savings of more than $30,000, how could the Council say no? The Council overwhelmingly approved the plan, and employees are already hard at work converting the space into the City’s newest department. If things go as planned, the employees for Planning and Community Development could be moving into their new offices early next month!
