The Atlanta Falcons make our city their home!
The Atlanta Falcons announced plans to move training camp to their headquarters in Flowery Branch beginning in the 2005 season. The club has conducted training camp at Furman University in Greenville, S.C., for the last 6 years including the training camp that begins at Furman July 27 this year.
We have had a great experience at Furman and value our relationship with Dr. Shi and his administration, said Arthur M. Blank, Falcons owner and CEO. This decision was driven by our desire to bring Falcons training camp closer to our fans and families and to allow more of them to participate in this exciting event.
Falcons fans will be able to participate in a number of activities at training camp in Flowery Branch. Along with watching practice, fans can participate in interactive games, obtain autographs from their favorite players and tour the club’s Mobile Museum and headquarters. Special activities for children will include Junior Falcons Training Camp, Punt, Pass & Kick competitions and appearances by Freddie Falcon.
Blank noted that the move to Flowery Branch will also benefit Falcons players and staff. Training camp is a long, intense and important part of our preparation for the season, he said. Moving camp to Flowery Branch will make it more convenient for our players’ families to visit and watch practice and for our support staff to do their jobs. It will also allow our coaches and staff to go home at night to be with their families.
To accommodate the player housing needed for training camp, the Falcons will build dormitory facilities on headquarters property and expand their current dining facilities. Construction will begin in October 2004 with plans to be completed in June 2005.
The Flowery Branch City Council granted approval for construction of the new facilities on June 30, 2004.
The Falcons will hold a press conference July 26 at 11 a.m. in Flowery Branch to provide more details on the club’s training camp and headquarters facilities plans.
Next year will begin the second era in team history that the Falcons will have held training camp at team headquarters. From 1979 to 1998, training camp was held at the team’s then-headquarters in Suwanee, Ga. Prior to Suwanee, the club held camp in Black Mountain, N.C., in 1966 and Johnson City, Tenn., from 1967 to 1970.
The Atlanta Falcons enter the 2004 season with an exciting leadership team, which includes the addition of Rich McKay as president and general manager and Jim Mora as the team’s twelfth head coach. The club’s first preseason home game is Friday, Aug. 20 vs. the Minnesota Vikings, and the first regular season home game is Sunday, Sept. 19 vs. the St. Louis Rams. The Falcons currently have a season ticket waiting list for the second straight year.
