FLOWERY BRANCH - Flowery Branch City Planner James Riker recommended to the city council Thursday night Jerry Whites and Associates of Alpharetta as the choice to prepare the city's new comprehensive plan.

He said after reviewing the six applicants, the firm was the "clear-cut" choice for the contract. Whites will work with Gainesville's Jaeger Company to prepare the plan at a projected cost of $50,000.

Riker also announced some success in updating the town's zoning map, which council members say is overdue. Riker's work was praised as fundamental to the council's focus on progress and continuing to prepare for healthy, quality growth.

He also reported that the budget process is moving steadily ahead and that the quarterly report described the town's economy as "very healthy."

MORE WATER

Water pressure problems in the city renewed discussion about a planned 750,000-gallon water tank to serve the town's future water needs.

The council plans to uphold its previous decision to maintain high powered pumps to control water pressure rather than elevating a tank for lower maintenance constant pressure.

EMPLOYEES RECOGNIZED

Officer David Jackels of the Flowery Branch Police Department became the town's Employee of the Month at Thursday night.

Jackels was nominated by Chief Gerald Lanich who said that he went beyond the call of duty to stop an attempted suicide. Lanich also awarded Jackels with the Lifesaver Award for his deed.

Also receiving an award at the work session was Wastewater Treatment Plant Manager Jimmy Dean. The Georgia Water and Pollution Control Association awarded Dean and his crew for "Outstanding Operation of a Water Treatment Plant," in its size category. Dean was complimented on his innovations in managing excess storm water.
